Clearing interest on Whatuni increases 27% year-on-year

Early evidence points to another bumper year for universities recruiting students through Clearing.

Between 6am and 10am today (Thursday 17th August 2017) the Clearing pages of Whatuni.com have seen a 27% increase in traffic. In a year when applications through the normal cycle declined, this suggests that there continues to be high demand for courses in Clearing.

With over 66 million visits a year to our websites and dedicated Clearing information across our sites, Clearing is a busy time at Hotcourses Group. The rich data that these visits produces is helping universities to better plan and make data led strategic decisions.

During this busy Clearing period our data can give valuable insights into the state of the market, what courses are of particular interest; are certain locations proving more popular than others? And for the first time this year – what impact are the TEF classifications having on student choices?

As we experience yet another volatile and unpredictable climax to the annual recruitment cycle, this real-time data also adds a much-needed layer of certainty for university student recruitment professionals desperately trying to gauge the state of play, model student behaviour, forecast outcomes and hit target.

Over the summer there has been much talk in the media about university fees and the need for universities to continue to link their degrees to meaningful employment outcomes. An analysis of recent student activity across the site suggests that this may not necessarily be playing out in Clearing.

Our data shows searches for Creative Arts courses have increased in London with particular interest in Clothing / Fashion Design and also in Interior Design. Russell Group institutions are interestingly seeing increased interest in Social Studies courses, with interest in these courses overtaking Biological Sciences when compared to last year. Post ’92 institutions continue to see year on year increases in Business and Admin subjects as well as significant increases in Computer Science.

There has been much debate as to impact that the much-heralded introduction of the TEF will have on the choices that students make. Clearing presents the first opportunity for the sector to analyse the TEF influence. Very early indications are showing that it has already had an impact on prospective student searches. Stay tuned for our full analysis next week.
