On Thursday 6th April 2017, Whatuni held its annual Student Choice Awards in London based on reviews by over 26,000 students. The awards were presented by comedian, David Mitchell and saw UK universities gain recognition across 12 categories.

Miles were travelled by the Whatuni team to collect reviews on campus

The Shortlist

To make this shortlist happen, an intrepid team of review collectors has visited 130 universities, travelled over 25,000 miles and spoken to more than 27,000 students this year.

The Whatuni Student Rankings are based on averages taken from tens of thousands of reviews submitted by students and published on  They cover the following 10 categories:

  • Accommodation
  • City Life
  • Clubs & Societies
  • Course & Lecturers
  • Job Prospects
  • Student Union
  • Uni Facilities
  • Support Services
  • Overall rating (which confers the title ‘University of the Year’).
  • International (based on the overall rating given by international students at each university)

This year we have also introduced two new categories: Postgraduate, which is decided in the same way as the International category, and a Giving Back category.  For this, we asked students to rate their university on how much they give back to the community, whether that be globally or locally, and whether any projects stood out.  The results of this category are especially telling of a changing sector and society.

The rankings, now in their fourth year, offer prospective students an unbiased, student-led alternative to traditional university ranking systems.
